1st Japanese Tea Ceremony
Michiko Kim graciously agreed to share her knowledge and technique of this 500 year-old tradition. She had all the materials necessary plus a great understanding of the ceremony and its history.
All the utensils are carefully cleaned before the guests arrive and in front of the guests. The tradition was brought from China to Japan by Buddhists monks. The caffeine in green tea is thought to help keep one awake during meditation.
The participants were directed in the correct way to receive the bowl of tea and the manner in which to drink it.
Michiko prepared each bowl of tea specifically for each participant.
Keiko served as Michiko’s assistant.
The “swishers” were meticulously created and depending on the quality can be quite expensive.
Please feel free to join us on the first Saturday of the month in Carstensen Hall from 1-2pm.
